BRINGING HOME A NEW KITTEN
Bringing home a new baby is an exciting event.
Your life never be the same, and neither will your cat's. Until now, kitty
has been the baby, and she may not be as excited about the new addition as you
are.
The tips below can help ease your pet's
stress, encourage her to welcome the baby and ensure that kitty remains an
important part of your growing family.
-
Before
the baby comes, have your veterinarian check your cat for parasites, good health
and updated vaccinations.
- Start new routines and establish
additional rules before the baby comes home.
- Allow your cat to investigate the baby's
room with supervision.
- Before baby's arrival, acquaint your cat
with the new scents by having someone bring home a worn article of baby clothing
or a blanket from the hospital and also by applying baby lotion or powder to
your hands.
- Invite friends with babies over to
accustom kitty to the sounds and scents of infants.
- Give your cat an especially warm welcome
when you bring the baby home. Include "kitty quality time" in your daily
schedule.
- Minimize stress by maintaining your cat's
regular feeding, sleeping and play routines.
- Stay calm and always supervise when the
cat is in the baby's presence.
- Give your cat a treat when she behaves
well near the baby.
- Be alert to any warning signs that the cat
may be distressed at the new situation. Look for improper elimination,
hiding or sudden aggression.
